What does it mean if my Breeder does/does not show their cats?

Having cats with titles really only confirms one thing to a family interested in a pet; that there are no genetic defects such as a kink tail or a protruding sternum in the cats that have been shown and have won titles. If you are interested in a Breeding Cat or a Show cat/alter, I cannot stress enough the importance of adopting your kitten from someone who does show. Breed Standards are documents that are written to give each breeder a reference point within which we all work to express our own vision of excellence within our breed of choice. It is very difficult to fully understand the Standard without being in a show hall and getting feedback from other breeders and judges about how well one's cats do or do not meet the Breed Standards.

When it comes to a family interested in a pet, it is much less important that your breeder have such a clear understanding of what will do well in a show hall. You, as an individual or as a family searching for a pet, have your own vision of excellence and should be most concerned with finding a breeder with whom you are very comfortable, who answers ALL of your questions, and is knowledgeable about the Breed's characteristics.

Now, I am bias, and will openly admit that. Cat shows are a lot of fun; a Breeder at a show has a chance to meet new people, show off their beloved kitties, and win titles for their cats. However, cat shows are very time consuming, and quite expensive. Unlike dog shows, there are no 'prizes' or cash awards at most cat shows. A breeder who is willing to make the commitment to attend shows is also demonstrating a different level of passion for what they do; to promote, and increase awareness for, the cats they show. Not showing does not make or break a breeder by any means; to me, it is only a further statement of passion and commitment to what we do. But, I am bias (and I did admit it now, twice ;) .
